Stewartville High School has extra mental health resources on hand this week after a former student shot and injured a member of the wrestling team before turning the gun on himself Friday.
District Superintendent Belinda Selfors said at a press conference Monday: “We will focus on providing space, flexibility and support for students and staff and to address any concerns that they may have. We are also coordinating efforts to support families who have been directly impacted by this tragedy and whose hearts have been broken, ensuring that they receive compassion, resources and ongoing care.”
Zumbro Valley Health Services is helping with that mental health care.
Heather Geerts, director of clinical services, joined Cathy Wurzer on Morning Edition Tuesday to talk about supporting students and the Stewartville community in the wake of a tragedy.
“I think this is the kind of situation where it's a lot of listening, a lot of trying to be there to provide that wraparound support, of, OK, ‘How do we make sense of something that really doesn’t make sense,’” Geerts said.
