It’s that time of year when Minnesotans are waking up to bird symphonies as more avian species return from their winter digs. That includes not only songbirds but larger aquatic birds, including the great blue heron.

On Saturday, volunteers with the nonprofit group Mississippi Park Connection will welcome those big birds back to the region with a bird-watching event. Sharon Stiteler, known to friends and fans as the 

, will be among the volunteers answering questions.

“We'll be stationed on the banks of the Mississippi River, and you can already see some great blue heron starting to incubate, and the double-crested cormorants are also back,” Stiteler told Morning Edition host Cathy Wurzer. “The egrets aren't going to be here for another couple weeks, but there's still lots of really cool activity to see right now.”
