The Minnesota state Legislature is on spring break. 

When lawmakers return next week after a holiday break, they may have a slimmer docket of bills to consider. DFL Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy joined Morning Edition Monday with an update on what's ahead after a key deadline passed last Friday.

Among the key policy issues before lawmakers are a recovery fund for small businesses impacted by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement surge, emergency rental assistance, gun control and Hennepin Healthcare’s financial problems. 

“When we finish up this year, this session in May, I certainly hope that we are acting to make life a little more affordable for people,” Murphy said. 

She also believes chances are good for recovery money for Hennepin Healthcare as it becomes a test case for 

“And I think this is an imperative for us. The Hennepin County Medical Center is a statewide asset, and if you have an accident on your farm, your tractor turns over, you're in a car accident, you're in a fire, Hennepin County Medical Center is where you're going to go to get highly skilled emergency care, trauma care, life-saving care, and everyday care,” Murphy said. "This is the first of, I think, many actions we're going to have to take.”
