In April, a mining ban near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness was lifted. Environmentalists have long warned that mining in the area could pollute its ecosystem.
In early June, Ali Ling, an assistant professor of civil engineering at the University of St. Thomas, told MPR News that mining near the federally designated wilderness area could be done safely.
David Chambers, president and founder of the Center for Science in Public Participation, a nonprofit formed to advise public interest groups and tribal governments on mining and water quality, spoke with MPR News host Clay Masters to offer a counterpoint.
