Fall colors update; temperatures change dramatically into Friday
We have one more warm day ahead before several cold fronts bring temperatures back to seasonal and below-seasonal levels. Meanwhile, fall colors in the northland are expected to reach their peak this weekend.
Severe drought returns to Minnesota for the first time since spring
Minnesota’s drought continued to deepen over the past week. Severe drought now covers 20 percent of the state for the first time since spring.
Last 80-degree day potentially of 2024. Much cooler this weekend
Enjoy what’s likely to be the last 80-degree day of the 2024 season. Two cold fronts will drop temperatures by Sunday to the coldest readings since April. Light rain is also possible. 
Why are we seeing so many northern lights this year? Another show possible Thursday night
It’s not your imagination. Northern lights are unusually frequent above Minnesota this year. This solar cycle has been very good at producing auroras visible over Minnesota, and our dry weather pattern has produced many clear sky nights so we can see the shows.
Summerlike warmth Wednesday and Thursday, colder air this weekend
Temperatures will warm up a bit more Wednesday and especially Thursday with highs in the 80s across southern Minnesota. More typical October chilly air arrives this weekend.

Enjoy our 70s and 80s the rest of this week. It looks like we’ll finally get some below-normal temperatures into Minnesota early next week.
Temps in the 60s and 70s Tuesday, climbing to 80s by Thursday
Sunny skies and anomalous warmth are the headlines yet again. We’ll be about 5-15 degrees above normal Tuesday with highs in the 60s and 70s. Eighty-degree readings return Thursday.
