Gov. Tim Walz on Tuesday took some modest steps on guns through executive measures after being unable to muster legislative support to pass restrictions on firearms and ammunition.

Owners of several Kia and Hyundai models will be eligible for free anti-theft hardware upgrades in the new year, following a lawsuit settlement between the automakers and several states, including Minnesota. 

The results set the ballots for a pair of January special general elections that will bring the Minnesota House back to its full capacity.

The project just north of Rochester has drawn community and legal scrutiny. A recent court filing from an environmental group seeks to delay the proposal.

Robbinsdale Area Schools will close three schools and its district headquarters building at the end of this school year to address a significant budget shortfall.
