We also now capitalize Indigenous when referring to the original inhabitants of a place. These decisions align with our goal to use language that is inclusive and respectful in our reporting, and are also consistent with our style of capitalizing racial and ethnic identifiers such as Asian, Hispanic and Native American. 

An upcoming conference aims to encourage journalists to examine their own racial biases and assumptions. MPR is part of that effort and is taking a deep look now at its own newsroom.

In covering the story of Garrison Keillor's relationship with Minnesota Public Radio, journalists at MPR News are working independently of their parent company's senior leadership.

Water, copper-nickel mining and climate change were the top environmental topics for MPR News in 2014. Concerns about pipelines carrying crude oil, the decline in pollinators and the anniversary of the Wilderness Act that created the BWCA are also on the list.
