Highway 61, the ribbon of road that winds along the North Shore of Lake Superior, offers motorists moments to marvel at the big lake, opportunities to stop at mom and pop shops and serene tree-lined scenery to fill the gaps.
Each building along the highway has a story, as do the structures already lost to time. Retired University of Wisconsin-Madison Professor Arnold Alanen has researched and written an extensive history of what has been constructed along Scenic Highway 61 and the stories of the people who shaped the North Shore. Alanen joined MPR News host Cathy Wurzer on Morning Edition to give readers a glimpse of “The Scenic Route,” published by the University of Minnesota Press.
