A second person was shot by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis. It spurred large crowds to gather and devolved into chemical irritant-clouded chaos Wednesday night. 

Federal officials say it began during a “targeted traffic stop” of an undocumented person from Venezuela that led to a car chase, then a foot chase, ending in a confrontation in a north Minneapolis neighborhood. A federal agent fired their weapon, reportedly in self-defense, one week after an ICE agent shot and killed Renee Macklin Good in south Minneapolis. 

A statement released Wednesday night from the Department of Homeland Security said the person and the agent were both in the hospital. 

DFL state Sen. Bobby Joe Champion was on the scene Wednesday and livestreamed it. He joined Cathy Wurzer on Morning Edition Thursday to share more about what he witnessed and his efforts to keep the peace. 

The incident came just a few hours after Gov. Tim Walz encouraged Minnesotans to document and film federal agents to “establish a record of exactly what’s happening in our communities” and to “help us create a database of the atrocities against Minnesotans” for future legal action.

Champion echoed the concern of an unreliable, untrue narrative coming from the Trump administration. 

“You can’t rely on them to come out and say exactly what's true, and whether there’s a notion of transparency. We saw that with the murder of Renee Good, where we would see video that would say one thing, but then you had DHS say something else happened,” Champion told MPR News. “So we’re pretty skeptical of ICE and the federal government, and not certain that they really have our best interests at heart.” 

Champion said filming can preserve evidence for any future investigations.
