January started warm but temperatures are nosediving as the month continues. 

A shot of Arctic air has brought the coldest conditions Minnesotans have felt in 

, with highs in the single and double digits below zero. 

Climate change and the urban heat island effect are causing the Twin Cities to see fewer days where the temperature stays below zero, according to climatologist and meteorologist Mark Seeley. 

“In the 19th century, in January, [sub-zero days] represented about 9 percent of all readings in the Twin Cities area. In the 20th century, it represented about 7 percent of all January days. And so far in the 21st century, it's only represented about 2 percent of all January days,” Seeley said.
