January comes to an end on a cold note despite warmer-than-normal start

January had two distinct chapters: a beginning that was warmer than normal and an end that was colder.

“We did have, in the second half of the month, about 25 low temperature records set across the state,” climatologist and meteorologist Mark Seeley said.

Some of the extremes seen across the state include 53 degrees at Canby and Marshall in southwestern Minnesota on Jan. 13 and 43 degrees below zero at Brimson and Kabetogama in northeast and northern Minnesota on Jan. 24.
