December was the second month of 2025 to be cooler than normal.

“Lots of subzero nights up in central and northern Minnesota,” climatologist and meteorologist Mark Seeley said. “We reported the coldest temperature in the 48 contiguous states 10 dates during the month.”

Winds were also extraordinarily strong for the month. From the period of Dec. 16 to Dec. 20, half of the days were reported to have 30 mph wind gusts. Wind chill values in much of the state were brought down to around minus 25 to minus 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
