It’s highly unusual for a public radio network to have a meteorologist on staff, yet MPR News Chief Meteorologist Paul Huttner has informed audiences on weather topics from day-to-day forecasts to severe storms for nearly two decades. Huttner will retire at the end of April.

Listeners of “All Things Considered” on MPR News have grown to rely on Huttner’s daily chats. Recently, longtime ATC host Tom Crann moved to YourClassical after two decades of hosting the flagship afternoon show. Crann said his daily chats with Huttner are what he misses the most about his daily shift on the air for MPR News.

“They were the highlight of my day and the broadcast. Paul doing weather on the radio is as good as it gets,” Crann said. “He's credible, affable and flexible, filling any time or slot you need with just the right essential information for our audience.”

Huttner has worked at Minnesota Public Radio since 2007. He began his career in operational forecasting at Chicago’s weather command in 1986 and started his TV meteorology career at WCCO-TV in Minneapolis in 1988. Huttner also worked at WGN-TV in Chicago and led a weather team at KGUN-TV in Tucson, Ariz., from 1997 to 2005.

Huttner started the Updraft Weather Blog and is the host of MPR’s “Climate Cast.” He’s also been a longtime voice of MPR News pledge drives.

“From genuine appeals to clever puns to keeping pace with any and all tactics and antics, Paul served as a true example of how to engage members while they're listening,” said MPR Director of Membership Jeff Moores. “Member Drives won't be the same without Paul's expertise."

Like he has done every time he’s on the radio, Huttner emphasized the data. “It's hard to believe I've done roughly 15,000 weather broadcasts with Minnesotans over these past 19 years,” he said. “It's a once-in-a-career lifetime opportunity to be able to create the Updraft blog, Climate Cast and to talk with our amazing audience about what we do during Member Drives.

“I'm full of gratitude to Minnesota MPR News weather listeners. And I'm so happy that we've built a great MPR weather team going forward."

Huttner’s last day on air will be April 30, 2026.
