Dry conditions and an unusually windy May led to blowing dirt and dust this week in parts of central and northwestern Minnesota. Air quality alerts are in place for parts of northwestern Minnesota through Friday evening.
Climatologist and meteorologist Mark Seeley said the conditions remind him of drought years in 1976 and 1988.
“We’re still really looking at a serious rainfall deficit developing this month. And we’ve got a lot of crops in the soil,” he told MPR News.
The dry conditions mixed with persistent winds have created conditions ripe for wildfires. So multiple red flag warnings are in effect as well for much of central and northern Minnesota through the evening hours Friday.
