Average temperatures across the state for January have dropped into an extreme level of cold. However, the final weeks of January may see the opposite effect. If so, Minnesota could have its warmest winter in nearly 30 years.

The snow, freezing rain, ice and frigid temperatures that hammered the Pacific Northwest in the past week have now been blamed for at least 10 deaths in Oregon, from hypothermia and falling trees or utility poles, along with five from hypothermia in the Seattle, Wash., area.
Measuring our wimpy winter so far
We’ve had a taste of really cold weather the past week but even that cold has been warmer than normal midwinter cold snaps. Snowfall has also been far behind normal values this season. 
Colder-than-normal Friday and Saturday before a big warmup
Friday and Saturday will be cold before a rapid warmup builds into Minnesota. Highs will be in the 30s to near 40 degrees next week.
