Annunciation Catholic Church and School shooting

On Aug. 27, 2025 gunshots broke out in Minneapolis during morning mass at Annunciation Catholic Church and School. Two children, Fletcher Merkel and Harper Moyski, died in the mass shooting. Twenty-eight other people were injured.

Dr. Walt Galicich, chief of neurosurgery at Hennepin Healthcare, says Sophia Forchas is in a medically induced coma and that a bullet remains lodged in her brain. He said her future remains uncertain, but there are also positive signs.

Two children remained hospitalized as of Wednesday morning, with at least one still in critical condition. Another underwent surgery Wednesday for a bullet fragment in his neck. Over a dozen others have been discharged from Minneapolis hospitals after good progress towards recovery.
