Wintry mix spreads across Minnesota

Overnight rain, sleet, freezing rain and snow caused a slushy and slippery start Tuesday across much of central and southern Minnesota, and western Wisconsin.

The slippery conditions — with temperatures hovering right around freezing in the Twin Cities — prompted some school districts to cancel or delay the start of classes. Find a list of those schools below.

Through the morning, some school districts that originally planned for a delayed start, changed course and opted to cancel classes or move to online learning. Officials with the Cambridge-Isanti district said in an 

 that they “were hopeful road conditions would improve by this time; however, they remain challenging and unsafe for travel.”

“Every weather-related decision is grounded in safety first, and we appreciate the trust and patience our families show as we balance timing, caution, and care,” the district said.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation 

 scattered icy road conditions across the state. In addition to the slush and ice, the overnight rain — combined with storm drains blocked by snow — led to ponding on streets in the Twin Cities early Tuesday.

The precipitation will gradually end Tuesday morning, but temperatures will fall below freezing late Tuesday into early Wednesday. That means Tuesday’s slushy streets and sidewalks may be icy on Wednesday morning.
