Storms move across southern Minnesota Wednesday morning

Torrential rain early Thursday led to flash flooding across parts of southern Minnesota and forced the closure of a stretch of Interstate 90.

A train of thunderstorms rolled over the same areas with a swath of 4 to 6 inches of rain reported across Mower, Fillmore and Houston counties. Rain continued to fall across much of southeastern Minnesota as of 7 a.m.

The Mower County Sheriff’s Office and the Minnesota Department of Transportation said Interstate 90 was closed in both directions near the Elkton and Dexter exits. That’s between Austin and Rochester.

Traffic was being routed onto state and county highways. There was no immediate word on when the freeway might reopen. Find more details on the 

 many other roads across the county were also closed due to flooding.

“Don’t drive through flooded roads, you don’t know if they’re washed out,” Mower County Sheriff Steve Sandvik told MPR News on Thursday morning. “We want to keep everyone safe — and with more rain anticipated, it’s a great concern at this point.”
