Frigid temperatures and ongoing icy road conditions prompted some Minnesota school districts to delay the start of classes Monday.

Districts running on a two-hour delay on Monday morning included:

The Minnesota Department of Transportation reported snow-covered highways in west-central and parts of northern Minnesota. The Minnesota State Patrol 

 and dozens of spinouts over the weekend.

Some communities across the state reported more than a half-foot of snow over the weekend, including 8 inches at Nevis, 7.8 inches at Alborn, 7.2 inches at the Duluth airport, and 6.5 inches near Brainerd and Tamarack.

Gusty northwest winds caused blowing and drifting snow late Sunday and early Monday — and also brought in much colder air. Temperatures across most of Minnesota dropped below zero overnight.
