Authorities investigating source of two sheens spotted on Mississippi River
State and local agencies are investigating the source of a substance that left a two-mile long sheen on the Mississippi River on Tuesday between Coon Rapids and Fridley. A second, smaller sheen was detected Wednesday.
Longtime St. Paul mayor George Latimer dies at 89
George Latimer served as mayor of St. Paul from 1976 until 1990, the longest run of anyone in the city’s history. He oversaw St. Paul’s downtown boom, a growth in development amid a changing city. Latimer died on Sunday at age 89 at his residence in St. Paul. 
St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter lays out 2025 proposed $855 million budget
Carter addressed what he called the city’s “raging housing crisis,” including aging housing stock, residents experiencing homelessness and the slowdown of new housing production.
Metro Transit police chief placed on paid leave
The Metropolitan Council said that Metro Transit Police Chief Ernest Morales III went on leave on Friday. Metro Transit has not provided further information on what prompted that move.
St. Paul’s Kellogg Boulevard bridge closes for 3-year construction project
The project is expected to last three years with a cost of roughly $91 million dollars. Funding for the project comes from a federal grant, state bonding and transportation legislation, municipal state aid and the city’s local capital investment program.

St. Paul iron foundry to increase operations after judge strikes down state order
A St. Paul iron foundry is scaling back up to normal operations after a court order overturned limits previously imposed by state regulators. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency ordered Northern Iron to reduce its operations in April, alleging that the foundry was violating federal air quality standards. But a judge has now partially struck down that order.
Twin Cities celebrity chef Justin Sutherland charged with threatening to shoot girlfriend
Prosecutors allege Sutherland choked his girlfriend and smashed her phone before pointing a gun at her. Sutherland’s attorney said the criminal complaint against his client is “riddled with false truths.”
